10 Genuine Ginger Problems

It's almost summer and the first poolside excursion of 2019 reminded me of the many dilemmas that bond us redheads. Here is a list of 10 ginger problems I have experienced in the last month- relate much?

1. Being the one who ends pool time early or creating a towel fort for one.

2. Asking anyone and everyone if they have sunscreen on a cloudy day- and receiving the oddest looks in response. Clouds do not equal safe, people!

3. People assuming I enjoy St. Patrick's Day... I do not!

4. People pointing out other redheads to me as though we are all related.

5. Always being assigned the redhead character in a show…. Why do I have to be Sansa? Maybe I want to be Cersei! Actually I want to be Ygritte so I don't know why I am complaining.

6. People asking if its my natural hair color- which is no longer a super simple answer. Short answer: it was. Long answer: my hair started to fade to brown so now I use henna to keep it red. Refer to My Henna Confessions for the full dirty tale.

7. People assuming I don't like sunny weather. #offended

8. An undying love for everything Tilda Swinton- who embraces the translucent lash and brow and makes me feel good about it. She also happens to be Jessica Chastain's inspirado for her Dark Phoenix character in the upcoming movie! Not really a problem but something that needed to be said.

9. People linking my temper to my red hair… pretty sure I’m just a feisty broad who is pissed you ate her leftovers.

10. The mascara dilemma. To wear makeup or not to wear makeup- that is the question and it's not quite the same for us redheads who basically paint on our lashes and brows. Hence the creation of the Gingerlash Mascara.

What do these Iconic Redheads and Lipstick Have in Common?

Just in time for the heat of summer- we are excited to introduce Redhead Revolution’s new line of all-natural vegan lipsticks. Made with organic oils and natural waxes our lipsticks feature a secret ingredient: Japanese Honeysuckle! While being a natural skin conditioning agent, Japanese Honeysuckle also has anti-aging and regenerative properties. In addition to being naturally high in UV protection! It’s a win-win for us redheads.

Each amazing color has been named after a redhead icon- which icon inspires you?

Amelia- The fearless flyer and first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart is a symbol of power and perseverance. Named in her honor, the Amelia is a bold but beautiful apricot, red shimmer.

Elizabeth- The ruler synonymous with an era of wealth and prosperity, Elizabeth left her mark on history as one of the most infamous rulers in British history. We already named our first line after her (The Golden Age), so why not continue? The Elizabeth is a warm gold peach shimmer.

Lucy- The lovable Lucy Ricardo will forever be remembered as a pioneer in both television and comedy. Her character is as unforgettable as her gorgeous red locks. The Lucy is a true red.

Rita- The Glamour girl of the 1940’s, Rita Hayworth captured hearts across the globe with the removal of a single satin glove (see Gilda!). The Rita is a true cherry red- as glamorous as it’s namesake.

How To Get That Gorgeous Summer Glow

Now that it’s summer it’s time to address the redhead summer dilemma: the ever elusive tan. While the rest of the population is suffering from Vita D deficiency our skin readily soaks up the sun, a trait that works both to our benefit and detriment. So while everyone else is busy getting a tan, let’s get our own SUMMER GLOW on.

Step 1: The nightly skin regime. Exfoliate at least once a week- not everyday, you don’t want to irritate your already sensitive skin. At night make sure to use a face wash that isn’t too harsh. I recommend Neutrogena Naturals or Burt’s Bees. Now for the crem de la crem: Coconut Oil! I can’t rave about this stuff enough. Try using CO as your nightly moisturizer. After you’ve washed your face, dab a bit on your fingers and apply it all over your face. If it feels a bit too greasy, take a damp washcloth and lightly massage the oil in after it has set for about 5-10 minutes. CO can also be used as an all-over body moisturizer. Not only will it feel great, but it just smells like summer. Make sure to get an Extra Virgin CO, preferably organic.

Step 2: The morning. Splash your face with water- don’t use face wash! Apply your daily SPF, I recommend a SPF 15-30 (no need to go higher). Now you can either use an SPF face lotion, a tinted moisturizer with SPF, or both.

Step 3: Makeup! Choosing the right foundation is key. If you happen to have freckles, make sure to choose a foundation light enough to let those beauty marks shine through. Try using a tinted moisturizer or bb cream- those tend to be lighter than traditional foundations. Next is blush. Since it’s summer you won’t really need to much of this, however I like to add a light rose or peach shimmer blush- just to give those cheeks a bit of shine. For final touches, a powder to soak-up any excess oils, mascara, and light lipgloss. Voila!

Being a redhead means loving everything that makes you unique! So embrace your fair skin and make it work for you.

#1 Skin Nourishing Tip Every Redhead Should Know

There’s no denying that when it comes to our skin, redheads are a little more sensitive. We burn, breakout and react. Each season brings it’s own challenges but both are tough on our skin. So how do we nourish our skin during the summer months- a summer that's looking like it’s gonna be a hot one- Exfoliate!

It’s time that we make tending to our skin a weekly ritual, rather than an every once in a while or whenever you have time thingy. Besides, taking care of your skin now means that you’ll look younger later, so it’s sorta worth it.

Why exfoliate?

Exfoliation is one of the most important practices that you can perform on your skin to achieve healthy and glowing skin, in addition to resolving certain skin issues. According to Holly Sherrard, education manager for Dermalogica Canada, “Exfoliating increases cell turnover to reveal newer, healthier skin cells, plus it decreases blackheads, minimizes hyperpigmentation and fine lines, and imparts an all-over healthy glow.”

For a great exfoliation product, we recommend an easy recipe that you can whip up right in your kitchen.

Antioxidant Body Scrub:

  • 1 Cup Ground Coffee (you can even use the grounds from your morning coffee)

  • 1 Cup Sugar or Salt

  • 1/2 Cup Organic Coconut Oil (Trader Joe's has a great one).

Mix all the ingredients together and store in an airtight container or mason jar. Use 1-2 times a week. The coffee and sugar/salt will exfoliate your skin while the coconut oil will leave it feeling soft and supple. Added bonus- the caffeine in the scrub helps to firm your skin and may even reduce cellulite.

Inspired: Makeup tips from GOT's Sophie Turner

Once again it is time to nerd out/ talk about makeup. This post is about Game of Thrones’ beautiful Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). In real life, Sophie is a burgeoning actress whose only just gotten her first big break via GOT. She also happens to be a gorgeous redhead who knows how to work those fiery locks.

In the pic above we see Sophie with a light foundation, copper eye shadow, rose blush and berry pink lips. These colors perfectly compliment her orange/copper hair and fair complexion. To transition this into a day-look, just lighten up on the blush.

Here we see Sophie with a gorgeous summer look. Her makeup is subtle with a light foundation, a pearl eye shadow, peach blush and coral pink lips. A light foundation, or mineral moisture tint, is key for those with fair skin. Sophie has also filled in her brows with an auburn tint. When looking for a brow tint, be sure to pick one that is only one to two shades darker than your natural brow color.

Inspired: Makeup tips from GOT's Rose Leslie

Alright it’s time to nerd out/ talk about makeup. This is part one of a three part series inspired by the gorgeous redheads of Game of Thrones.

First things first, if you haven’t jumped on the GOT train then you seriously need to get your shit together and get on board- you are missing out! However, this post is not on the intricacies of Westeros politics or how badass Daenerys is- so you won’t be too lost.

Each of the three main redheads (Ygritte, Sansa and Malisandre) fall somewhere in the redhair spectrum, which means that each has makeup needs that are not only unique to their red strands but also the type of red hair they have.

Our first redhead is Ygritte, played by Rose Leslie. Having been ‘kissed by fire’, Ygritte’s fierce nature is captured in her fiery strands. Back to reality- Rose Leslie is a successful actress having also played a major role in Downton Abbey.

She is a gorgeous ginger and she knows how to work her fair skin, freckles, and copper/orange strands.

In the pic above she has chosen to play up her eyes with intense dark liner and keep her lips a simple, yet classic rose pink.  In order to flatter her pink undertones, Leslie used an apricot-pink blush. Note that her freckles are still visible through her light foundation. Keeping the foundation light is key for redheads who sport loads-o-freckles and for those with fair skin in general. For this reason, a mineral moisture tint is often a better choice as it allows for even coverage without being too heavy. Besides, why would you want to cover us such a beautiful trait!

Here we see Leslie make her lips pop with a magenta lipstick. Just goes to show redheads have a larger color palette to choose from. If you want to go with a bold lip color, downplay the eye makeup and vice versa.
