Lipstick Confidence

The end of the first month in 2019 is nigh, y'all! Have you started on your resolutions? Did you even write resolutions for this year? Or are you still working your way through your Grandma's fruit cake?

When writing my resolutions for this year I decided that my #1 was to 'not set myself up for failure by creating unrealistic resolutions.' I think that's kinda genius but I admit I might be a bit biased. So instead of doing the traditional 'stop sucking at life' resolutions like 'exercise more' or 'stop buying fruit and never eating it', I decided to create a list of fun challenges that I want to accomplish by the end of 2019. Now that we are three weeks into the year, I am happy to report that I can already cross one off!

Challenge #3: Wear red lipstick everyday for a week.

Why did you pick this as a challenge, you might ask. It's just lipstick after all- is that really a challenge? Except that it's not 'just lipstick.' It's RED lipstick and red lipstick comes with a history. Red lipstick is that little black dress. It's your mom's pearl earrings. It's a statement piece that requires you to take stock of your intentions before leaving the house. You will get noticed- especially if you are a redhead.

My goal was to embrace the boldness. I wanted to allow myself to be noticed without retreating into my cozy shell. This wasn't about the attention- male or female. It was an exercise in being comfortable in my own skin, regardless of what accessories are adorned. Sans challenge I am no stranger to lipstick. I've worn it plenty of times without a second thought but I always notice that when I do, I walk with my head a little higher and my step is a little more brazen. I have 'lipstick confidence.' I wanted to feel that everyday for a week. I wanted that 'lipstick confidence' to become a habit- a habit that follows even when I go out in sweatpants and no makeup.

And so, I wore red lipstick to work. I wore red lipstick to the grocery store (and bought toilet paper!). I wore red lipstick while I drank my coffee alone in my room. I wore red lipstick for 7 days straight and, while my confidence in how I looked often wavered (I felt self-conscious A LOT), the goal behind the exercise never did.
